7 Lifestyle Hacks for Hashimoto’s

Anyone with Hashimoto’s Disease knows getting well and staying well can be challenging.

When I was diagnosed with Hashimotos in 2011, finding the right practitioners in Brisbane to help me get well was a nightmare. It didn’t take me long to discover that mainstream doctors could provide me with a diagnosis and medication but that was as far as they could go. Even a little bit of research told me that the reason I had Hashimotos was because my body and immune system were really sick.

So while taking 50 mgs of Thyroxin every morning was going to give me a daily dose of that much needed thyroid hormone, unless I healed the rest of my body I was not going to get well. I needed practitioners who could look at my health holistically.

Unfortunately functional medical practitioners in Brisbane even today are few and far between and have either closed their patient books because they are so busy or take many months to get into. So while I waited for that precious appointment I started learning as much as I could about the thyroid and auto immune disease.

I needed to know why I felt as bad as I did and what was going on in my body. Frankly what I discovered completely overwhelmed me.

  • I needed to detox my body big time
  • I needed serious help to heal my gut and get my liver working well again
  • my thyroid hormone was not the only hormone in my body that was contributing to my ill health. I needed someone who understood adrenals, the HPA axis, estrogen, progesterone and insulin
  • my immune system was really sick which is why my EBV, Ross River Fever, Herpes and Staph infections were taking it in turns to rear their ugly heads
  • the stress of my job was contributing big time
  • while I was eating okay my body required a whole lot more essential nutrients

Over the next few years I changed what I ate and how I lived and the following 7 lifestyle hacks played a really important part in helping me to get well and stay well.

I hope they can help you too!

1. Love your Hashi’s
Accept it as a gift from the universe, not the enemy.
Love your body where it is at this moment in time.
Nuture it, be gentle with it and help it to heal.

2. Dial back the Stress
This is a tough one for many of us.
Accept that stress may be one of the reasons why you have an auto immune disease.
If you can find a way to take a break, do it! Go part time! Change careers! Be brave!
Your body will thank you for it and give back in spades.

3. Ditch the nasty Chemicals and Endocrine Disrupting Hormones
This is so easy to do nowadays!

  • Buy green cleaning products that are chemical free
  • Only use 100% natural or organic beauty products on your skin and hair
  • Find an organic hairdresser
  • Buy spray free or organic fruits and vegetables
  • Take plastics out of your life
  • Eat grass fed beef, free range pork and chicken, organic/pasteurised eggs and wild caught fish

4. Install Water Filters
This one made a huge difference to how I felt. Flouride and chlorine are not your friend if you have Hashimoto’s.
Put filters on your shower and on the water you drink.

5. Say Goodbye to Gluten
This was the very first thing I did. I have not eaten gluten in over 10 years.
Like most people with Hashi’s I am gluten intolerant. If I eat gluten it flares up my anti-bodies.
To me its a no brainer.
It’s easy to do and I don’t miss it.

6. Sugar is Out and Colour is In
Sugar is nobody’s friend and certainly not someone who has an autoimmune disease.
Crowd out carbohydrates and packaged food from your diet with a rainbow of colourful fruits and vegetables.
Add nuts and seeds and get to know lentils, chickpeas (unless you react to them) and gluten free grains like buckwheat and amaranth.
Oh, and don’t forget my favourite, Quinoa which is packed with protein.
Your body will love you for it and you will just feel so much better.

7. Meditate, Meditate, Meditate
What more can I say.
Go within yourself. Reconnect with who you are and who you want to be. You will be surprised what you find!
