How Healthy is Your Brain?

Did you know diets high in sugar and carbohydrates are linked to a significant increase in the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment and dementia when you are older?
A study by the respected Mayo clinic shows people who eat a diet high in carbohydrates and sugars are four times more likely to get mild cognitive impairment whereas people who consume a diet high in healthy fats are 42% less likely.
So why are healthy fats so important for your Brain?
Because your Brain is nearly 60% fat and by consuming the fatty acids that are found in healthy fats you are feeding your Brain what it needs to stay healthy and perform at its best.
5 Fats that help keep your Brain healthy! 
1. Wild Caught Fish – salmon in particular is an excellent source of DHA, a fatty acid that helps develop and protect brain cells and can improve memory and cognition if consumed a couple of times a week 
2. Avocados – are an absolute powerhouse in providing monounsaturated fats to reduce the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure and feed your brain. Add some feta cheese and a little lemon or lime to spice them up on toast or add them to your smoothies of a morning 
3. Eggs – not only are eggs no longer considered a major risk to heart health and cholesterol it turns out your brain really loves them. Eggs for breakfast a few times a week will give your brain the much needed choline it needs for healthy memory and cognition 
4. Nuts – including a handful of nuts in your day will give you Vitamin E, Omega 3 fatty acids, copper and manganese all which will help nurture and protect brain cells as well as giving you a nice little burst of protein for energy 
5. Extra Virgin Olive Oil – This should be no surprise to anyone and it certainly is not to the Italians and Greeks who use it liberally in all their meals. I use it everyday not just on salads but to add goodness to a whole variety of foods like eggs, avocados and meats knowing I am feeding my brain what it needs to thrive
