How I shifted 7 kilos at 60!

For men and women losing weight after 50 is hard and it is often even more difficult for women as they struggle with the hormonal changes of menopause.

My weight gain started in my late 40’s and continued into my 50’s with menopause and Hashimoto’s Disease.

Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease that attacks the Thyroid, a gland at the front of the throat which is a very important part of the Endocrine System. The Thyroid produces hormones that every cell in the body need for energy and to maintain a healthy metabolism. Without the right amount of Thyroid hormone everything slows and you start to feel like you are running on empty.

After being slim, eating well and exercising my whole life I could not understand why over the space of a couple of years I could put on nearly 6 kilos. So for the first time in my life I decided to get a personal trainer and join Jenny Craig.

None of it worked!

Not only was I not losing any weight I was absolutely exhausted and stuggling with every day tasks.

Fast forward 11 years.

I just turned 61 and stronger and healthier than I have been since my thirties and I am proud to say I have lost 7 kilos over the past 12 months. Kilos that I have not been able to for quite a long time.

How did I do it?

1. I pursued my passion

In March 2020 when the pandemic was announced my husband and I were just over a month into a nine month trip through Europe.

I had been planning this trip for over twelve months and it was to be the trip of a lifetime however like many people, Covid 19 had other plans. The short story is we got locked down four days after arriving at our family’s villa on the Mediterranean in southern Spain which is where we stayed until returning home to Brisbane in September that year.

Without realising it at the time these seven unplanned months in Spain, two of which were in complete lockdown, were a gift during a very difficult and frightening time. I had no choice but to do very little and contemplate and meditate on what I wanted to do next with my life.

It was very clear that the world was going to change dramatically with Covid. What that would look like nobody knew. No longer were we in charge of our own plans. We didn’t even know when or how we were going to get home!

One thing I did know is that when I returned home I no longer wanted to work in Human Resources and that whatever I did, I wanted to be of service and make a difference to people.

I just didn’t know how.

It wasn’t until we returned to Australia and were spending two weeks at a friends apartment in Sunshine Beach recovering from our trip home and quarantine that I found my “how” when I discovered there was such a thing as Health Coaching.

I had spent my 50’s healing myself from Hashimoto’s Disease and learning all I could about health and wellness. If I was going to listen to a podcast or read an article it was on wellness. I changed what I ate and how I lived and could see what a difference having a Health Coach could have made to me during this time of my life.

Within a week I had found the right program for me and in January 2021 I started my Institute of Integrated Nutrition acclerated Health Coaching Program.

I loved every minute of it and I applied everything I was learning.

Without setting out with a clear intention to lose weight that is exactly what happened.

2. I really cleaned up my diet – even though it was pretty good to start with I applied everything new I was learning about nutrition and my body loved every moment of it

3. I focused on healing my gut – we spent a month at the beginning of our overseas trip living in a tiny village in Bali which had left me with some parasites in my gut. Having a healthy gut with the right bacteria is essential to losing weight so getting rid of the parasites and healing my gut including my liver was essential

4. I started Intermittent Fasting – I think this has been the big game changer for me. I have about a 14 hour fast between dinner and my smoothie for breakfast around 10.00 am. I do this 3 – 4 days a week and aim for a 16 hour fast 2 days a week

5. I cut back the alcohol – I am not a big drinker but just dropping from a glass or two five nights a week to a glass or two on a Friday or Saturday night has really made a difference to how I feel

6. I committed to the right regular physical activity – for me that is yoga two times a week on top of the 25kms of walking my husband and I usually do together. I have also started some strength building exercises at home for my arms and found any exercise I did during my fasting period of a morning was very effective at burning fat particularly on my belly

Having built these behaviours and habits up over months, they are now just part of how I do things. They are not set in stone but I aim to stick to them 80% of the time and I am still hoping to lose a couple more kilos.

It is not until our memories start to slip that we realise how essential they are for working and living well.

The exciting news is the Hippocampus which is the memory centre of the Brain makes up to 700 new cells every day. If you put these cells in a growth environment they will thrive, keep them in a toxic environment and they will die.

This program starts with a review of your Brain health using the Dr Amen on line Brain health assessment tool which will give you a personal report of your current Brain health.

Then using the BRIGHT MINDS pneumonic as a guide we will look at each of the 11 major risk factors that steal your mind and what you can do to manage these risks, sharpen your memory, boost cognitive function, reverse brain ageing and decrease your risk of Alzheimer’s Disease.
