Why Being Brain Fit is so Important!

So what does it mean to be Brain Fit and why is it so important?

Lets start with some facts on how truly mind-blowing your Brain is!

Did you know that your Brain:

  • Is comprised of 100 billion neurons
  • Has more connections than the stars in the universe
  • Is only 2% of your body weight yet uses 20% – 30% of your calories and 20% of your oxygen
  • Is capable of storing 6 million years of the Wall Street journal

To put it in a nutshell your Brain is the most energy hungry amazing organ in your body.

Not only is it your organ of intelligence and character, your Brain is involved in everything single thing you do and feel. When your Brain works right you work right, and when your Brain is troubled you have trouble in your life.

A fit Brain means your Brain is healthy and capable of supporting you to live the sort of life you want to live. You will be happier, healthier, have better relationships, make better decisions and be more creative and successful.

Yet how much do we really know about how to look after, nurture and protect our Brains?

It has only been over the past couple of decades that Brain health has become a topic of real interest to doctors, medical researchers, the media and now to people like you and me.

Studies from right across the globe are now showing us the damage concussion and head trauma can have on the Brain of a footballer, with many of them now suffering from heart breaking early dementia and mental health issues.

Not so surprising I guess when you realise your Brain is the consistency of soft butter encased in a very hard and sharp skull.

Then there is the increase in mental health issues across the world, particularly since Covid. Did you know that over 50% of people will have some form of mental health issue such as anxiety or depression at some stage in their life. I don’t think there are many of us who can say we do not have a friend or family member who has not suffered from some form of mental health issue.

I can personally vouch for this when the stress of caring for a father with Alzheimer’s Disease brought on the first panic attacks of my life at 56 years of age. It was not only frightening but seriously affected my life and my happiness.

And let’s not forget the really big elephant in the room, Alzheimer’s Disease.

The statistics on the increase of this disease around the world are frightening. Current predictions are that 50% of people 85 or older will be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease or some other form of dementia before they die and according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) dementia has now overtaken coronary heart disease as causing the greatest burden of illness, injury and premature death in older Australians.

The really scarey thing is that scans show that Alzheimer’s Disease starts in the Brain 20 years before the first symptoms start to appear. So what you are doing to your Brain in your 40’s, 50’s and 60’s is determining how healthy your Brain will be as you age.

So, while this may all sound a bit overwhelming the good news is you can take control over what is happening to your Brain health. You are not stuck with the Brain you have today.

The decisions you make today about what you eat, how you exercise, how you sleep and how you engage and nurture your Brain will make all the difference to how fit your Brain is and how fit it will stay.

Your Brain health is literally in your hands.

Now you know what being Brain Fit is and why it is so very important, subscribe to get my next newsletter where we will look at what you can do to start building a healthier Brain today.

Remember the sooner you start the better.
